Photo coasters

Your photos on a set of coasters

Make 1 to 6 drink coasters with your photos, printed in colour on your own 3D printer. Give every coaster its own photo, or split one photo over the set. A raised rim keeps drips in, recesses on the bottom take rubber or felt pads, and a holder keeps the stack together. See it all in 3D before you download.

What is TD?

TD (transmission distance) is how thick a filament must be before you can no longer see the colour below it. Light colours are more see-through than dark ones. We estimate it from the colour; if your filament brand lists a TD value, fill it in for a more exact preview and better layer choices.

    • Print the coasters flat, picture up, with the layer heights above and 100% infill (or at least 4 walls and 5 top layers). Every coaster uses the same filament plan, so you can print them all at once or a few at a time.
    • Hot drinks: PLA starts to soften at about 55–60 °C, so a mug of fresh tea can leave a ring in it. Print in PETG for hot mugs; PLA is fine for cold drinks.
    • Turn on elephant foot compensation (about 0.15 mm) for a clean bottom edge. The small recesses for the pads bridge over by themselves: no supports needed.
    • Stick the pads in when the coasters have cooled. For a top that's even easier to wipe, a thin clear coat (spray varnish or food-safe epoxy) seals the layered colours.
    • 3MF holds the coasters on the bed with each filament colour and, for layered colours, the filament changes: PrusaSlicer opens it ready to slice. In other slicers, add the changes from the plan if they're missing.
    • STL: a ZIP with the coasters, one file per filament for colour areas, the holder and the plan.
